Role: Mixing, Editing, and Mastering Engineer
For "Summertime," I was handed the raw, unedited recordings and tasked with building a complete spatial environment from scratch. My main goal was to add "life" back into a flat recording by creating a clear, open world for the instruments to live in. The biggest challenge was the saxophones. I wanted them to sound like they were floating all around the listener while still feeling natural. It took some serious work with Pro Tools to get the panning and reverb timed just right to hit that effect. I also had to do some heavy lifting with the EQ; the guitar plucking and slapping were fighting the saxophones for the same space, so I carved out those frequencies to clear up the mud and make the whole mix feel wide and expensive.
Technical Specs
Edited, mixed, and mastered in Pro Tools, transforming raw tracks into a polished, spatial production.
Created an immersive room tone using a combination of precision panning and timed reverb to give the mix more depth.
Performed frequency carving to separate the guitar's percussive elements (slaps and plucks) from the saxophone's range, eliminating tonal masking.
Balanced intricate panning details to create a 3D-style soundstage where the lead instruments feel like they are moving through the space.
Mastered the track to ensure the spaciousness of the mix translated well across different speaker systems.
